Celebrating National Assisted Living Week at Glenmere

National Assisted Living Week is September 13 through 19.  This nation-wide observance celebrates what makes Assisted Living unique and wonderful and, while it is a Glenmere-wide celebration, the activities department takes the lead in designing specific programs and events.  The theme for 2015 is “Nourishing Life: Mind, Body, Spirit.” Glenmere Assisted Living, a part of Friendly Senior Living, in Pittsford, NY, takes

Honoring Certified Nursing Assistants

In June we honor our Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) for the tremendous work they do in support of our Members. The CNA’s at the Friendly Home are the closest confidants to our Members. They help our Members live their best lives every day, and they hold our Members’ hands in comfort on their worst ones. CNA’s are the unsung heroes of the work we do, and we couldn’t provide excellent care without them. My column today is dedicated to all of the CNA’s who serve the Members of the Friendly Home. We appreciate you more than you know! Thank you for all you do every day!

Celebrating Our Nurses

National Nurses Week begins on May 6. I am dedicating this blog to the nurses who do so much to make a difference in the lives of our Members. THANK YOU for all that you do every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide compassionate and dedicated care to our Members!

A Nurse is more, Why?
Though nobody, can say why, for sure,
Nurse's desire, for service, is pure.
Not for themselves, it has to be for others.
A life dedicated, to their sisters and their brothers.

Celebrating Volunteer Service

National Volunteer Week is April 12-18. While the Friendly Home is so very grateful for the service of our dedicated volunteers every day, this week is an especially good time to say a heartfelt “Thank You!” for all that they do to enhance the lives of our Members.

What do our volunteers do? So much! Here’s just a sampling:

  • Spend time visiting one-on-one with Members

  • Sing, dance, garden and read

  • Accompany Members on fun outings to local restaurants

  • Play instruments

  • Bring in their beloved pets

Celebrating Social Work Month!

March is National Social Work Month. In recognition of that, I thought I’d write about the role of social work in a long-term care facility. In general, the role of the social worker is to enable each individual to function at the highest possible level of social and emotional wellness.

Happy Holidays!

The holiday season is always special. When I was a child, I loved this time of year because of the presents. As an adult, I love this season because of the gifts. What is the difference? Let’s look at the definitions:

What We're Grateful For!

In honor of Thanksgiving Day, we conducted an informal poll of our Members, families, staff and volunteers to ask what they are grateful for. Many people responded “friends and family;” here are some of the other blessings we counted!

My health! – Gene, Family

The happy faces at the Friendly Home. – Joy, Volunteer

My friend, Karen. They call us the BFF’s! – Diane, Member

I think we are in the best place possible. I feel lucky to be here. There’s so much going on! – Rosemary, Member
